Cycling challenge.

June 11 - June 19 2021

Cyclist and photographer Ignac Bakše set out on a multi-day journey to document the beauties of the Slovenian landscape with his lens.

Cycling the Slovenian border.

One of the main goals of the project was to cross the distance of the Slovenian border, I.e. 1,382 km. Slovenia is a very diverse and green country, as forests cover almost 60% of the entire surface of the country and the landscape is quite hilly.

Such a good idea. I’ve already thought about cycling the Slovenian border, but of course when time allows. Well done team!

Family challenge.

While on the road, Ignac was supported by his family: wife Ria and little son Ignac. In this way, he alleviated problems with food supply, spare clothing and hydration.

It was an adapted form of endurance cycling, where instead of self-support or support by a professional team, this part of the challenge was performed by the family, in this case the rider's wife. That way allowed the cyclist not only to focus on his ultimate goal but also moral and emotional support.

Route.

The route plan was set to run as close as possible to the existing state border and as much as possible on Slovenian territory, but on certain sections riding with road or gravel bike was not possible. Also, in a couple of cases, the route crossed through neighboring countries for a few kilometers as it was the most optimal route. In the end, however, the entire route was drawn as close as possible to the shape of the existing Slovenian border, which was also the goal and purpose of the project.

The essence of cycling is not (just) suffering. It is also a journey. Solo, with company, on paved roads or on desperate single tracks. Sometimes with improvisation, because it can’t always go according to plan.

Surface.

Quite a large part of the route was gravel or forest trail, in some cases even demanding single trails often too steep for a gravel bike. There were also some extraordinary cases when it was necessary to adjust the route according the given situation.

Gear.

The bike that made the whole trip was Specialized Diverge with a few upgrades and equipped with Apidura cycling bags. The cyclist carried around 7 kilos of equipment and 1 - 1.5 litres of fluid every day. The final weight of the loaded bike was about 18 kilos (40 lbs).

Company.

He occasionally had a cycling company along the way. He traveled solo on stages 4, 5, partly on 6 and 7. He had company for more than half of the entire route. The largest part and almost half of the route was done by his friend Anže Lemovec. Other participants were father Nace and mother Branka Bakše, Niko Korber, Urh Košir, Robert Medle, Matej Malenšek and Trapci.
